Yes. Make a Time Machine backup of your old system, let it finish. Double check its size by then going on the external drive you made the backup onto and go into the folder “backups” find the backup you just did by sorting the finder window by date if needed. Right click on it and select get info. The box that comes up will tell you its exact size. If it is under 242 gigs. You are good to go.

However, if the funds are available, I'd go with the next level of performance with the M2 chip. It's nice to have the ability to run more resource intensive programs should you wish to do so. Also, prices may come down in the fall when Apple introduces new products. Think M1 vs M2. Will Apple lower the cost of the M3 chip? Regardless, the M2 with 8Gb and 256 is a vastly improved experience from at 2014 Mac Mini.
