This model is compatible with the final version of macOS Big Sur (macOS 11).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My prior owned 2017 Mac Air is running Monterey and Big Sur is 2 versions back. It can’t be upgraded to very latest OS, which is Ventura. You should have no trouble running Big Sur and if you partition your SSD you can actually install more than 1 version of macOS. Although I can’t upgrade beyond Monterey, I installed Ubuntu Linux also, so my system is dual boot and Linux will be my primary OS and it can be upgraded. This is a 6 year old computer, it runs well and MacBooks are well built and known for their reliability and durability. It did take about 3 or 4 days effort to get Linux installed and working adequately, particularly in regards to WiFi, because I had to find and install the proper Broadcom driver. This computer meets my needs but if you game or do graphics you should get a newer machine with higher resolution, my Mac has a non retina IPS display of 1400 x 900. Evaluate your use cases before buying, this is good machine for basic tasks.
