It’s because you purchased the lower cost MacBook Pro. The one for $1399 & under only upgrades to 256. Whereas the one for $1699 upgrades to 512 & the one for $2399 upgrades to 1 or 2TB. If I were you I would return it & either pay the difference for the upgrade or keep it. It’s still not a bad machine it’s still an Apple.
