No, it will only work on the 11 inch and the 12.9 iPad Pro models for 2018. No backwards compatibility.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have heard of ZERO issues with the first Apple Pencil. I used mine from 2015 up until I got the new one. Never had any issue whatsoever. But no, the new 2nd gen only works with the new iPad Pro models. The 10.5 only works with the original Apple Pencil—which is still a must have accessory for any older iPad.

So I believe you will need to use the version 1 Apple Pencil. FYI, we have 3 of them in our household and all are working flawlessly, so I wouldn't be too concerned about the 1st get Apple Pencil.
