You have asked a question about a SPRINT branded/carrier-assigned device. The answer if it can be GSM unlocked though is YES. This is extended by Sprint to its customers (particularly postpaid). Information on this can be reviewed here: http://www.sprint.com/legal/unlocking_policy.html The iPhone 5s is on the list of eligible devices for domestic and international unlocking.

If it is AT&T, you can unlock it for another GSM network carrier, but not for Sprint, Verizon, Boost or any CDMA cellular service. You can find more what are all the differences between the iPhones in http://www.everymac.com

No, do not purchase, these phones cannot be used for anything other than a post paid contract at Sprint. They are locked and unless you have the previous phone number tied to the account or the previous owners name you cannnot use this in any other way!!
