No, but the back will be exposed. I believe you can purchase a back cover only to go along with the keyboard for extra protection.

You really don't need either. We bought as a gift and our daughter wanted the key board. It is easier typing. We did not buy a cover but she has since gotten one since so many options a and styles. It will protect it. She also had the glass protector put on like you put on iPhones. Black ice?

This keyboard doesn't cover the back of the iPad but does function as a smart cover for the face of the iPad when closed.
