you do not need to subscribe to apple tv at all. click the home button twice to access your apps.

The answer is, you can watch your Netflix and Amazon Prime apps on Apple TV device without subscribing to Apple TV service. However the device's hard drive is for storing apps. You CANNOT store movies to the device's hard drive.
