It can only play from iTunes enabled computers (Mac or PC) that are on the same network.

Unfortunately Apple it’s pretty close on that matter so no it won’t access any other media stored outside of the box because they want you to use Apple services, but if you’re looking for a box that’s does that, the nvidia shield will be your best option unless you need to use itunes, it’s an android based streamer and it will allow you to access your music from any external storage, you can also try using plex but I don’t know if that will compress the music files, good luck
