You would still pay the content provider the same service fee to stream that you do on your smart TV. The benefit with the Apple TV is the ability to download other apps from the App Store. It also is an added benefit for a “dumb” TV.

Please try again later.The Apple TV does not come with streaming service at no charge, but it does allow you (4th generation) to download apps directly to the device from the App Store which your smart TV likely does not. You will have to pay the content provider the service fee to stream their content regardless of the device you stream it to.
