The "GPS" version (this one) will answer calls and forward text messages from your iPhone using either Bluetooth or Wifi (if your phone is out of the short Bluetooth signal). Your Wifi between the watch and the iPhone needs to be on the same local network (SSID). Wifi is less desirable since Bluetooth uses less battery on the phone. Do you really want some range? Consider the more expensive "GPS + Cellular" Apple Watch Series 3. For about $10 per month (and activation fee) you can add it to your mobile phone data plan. Then you can get text messages and take calls anywhere (in your cell coverage are) and leave the phone behind!
