“I currently have a older apple watch w/ GPS only. Will this watch work in the same manner without activating with a carrier? I have AT&T on my iphone, but want to just pair with my cell phone at first.”

Yes, the LTE versión work with GPS signal.

Yes you can pair it and will work together if you are connected to WiFi without activating on a carrier. You have to have watch and phone with you. I used mine for a few weeks before activating cellular on carrier. Wanted to see how it would work before activating cellular. I always have my phone with me and usually connected to WiFi.

You only have to pair with your carrier if you want to access using the cellular capabilities on the watch without your phone close by...Hope this helps
