Yes and no. The watch does have to be initially paired with your iPhone but if you activate the cellular service on the watch you don’t need your phone with you after the initial pairing. If you choose not to activate the cellular service then your watch must be with in Bluetooth range of your phone or on the same WiFi network.

I can however tell you that with her iPhone in the house on the kitchen table and she is out in back yard at the edge of our property/lot. she can get text messages and WhatsApp on her Series 4 watch. We just tried it. The actual distance is only 120' only, but through walls and doors. I cannot tell you if it will work at the supermarket while her cell is at home. The watch is brand new to her. She always carries her iPhone in her purse. While driving on the Highway, with purse in vehicle, her watch works on messages, calls, and internet. I guess it is using data when that happens. More testing needs to be done to determine limits. We have ATT cell/data plan for phones but nothing for watch. It is an unlocked Series 4 watch. Hope this helps. Kohljon.
