• You can connect them. However, with the GPS/Cellular version, it works independently and your phone is not needed for the watch to operate.

• You need to download the watch app on your phone.

• You don't need to have the wifi-cellular plan if you buy that watch. It will work with just wifi even though you're not connected to a phone plan.

• From what I have seen, if my phone is off, the separate number my watch has works without a phone.

• Yes any watch should be connected initially to your Apple iPhone
