Yes you need to download free Arlo app to view camera. And yes you would need to pay for subscription after trial is complete in order to view / record images in cloud.

There is no payment needed for the Arlo app. With the Arlo app, you will have access features such as Arming/Disarming your system, library, camera settings (e.g activity zones, geofencing) Help Center and many more. 
Current features that can be managed once the Arlo cameras are linked to the Google Home app: 
•	Live stream Arlo cameras on Google Assistant devices with voice command
•	Receive motion alerts via voice announcements (https://kb.arlo.com/000062611/Get-Arlo-Motion-Alerts-on-a-Google-Hub)
•	Checking Device Status
When the trial that was included with your Arlo camera purchase ends, you have the option to purchase an Arlo Secure or Arlo Secure Plus plan to continue using paid features like 2K/4K cloud recording and interactive notifications.
