I am not sure if it is required, as the app came with a free 30 day trial with all the bells and whistles. But quite frankly, why wouldn’t you want one? The whole reason behind security is that somebody else is also monitoring and protecting your home. Review all the features - 27 different things you can monitor for - even with the basic plan - it’s well worth it.
