No. You do not have to have a monthly subscription. The system does come with a 3 month trial to Arlo Secure. Arlo Secure gets you 30 day storage up to 4k resolution and emergency response. If you don't have any subscription you are limited to a 7 day storage and I believe up to 2k resolution. I have attached a comparison of 3 Arlo plans.
