Only one of the LAN ports have internet at a given time. The only difference is that the top one is 2.5G and the bottom one is 1G. I'm unsure which it selects for Internet if both are connected. I have heard that most people use the second port for accessing the management interface with a device directly. But I've not confirmed this works myself. You do not need to go through a router first, but I highly recommend one once you've confirmed connectivity. Otherwise you can only connect a single device.

The top port supports speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, ideal for multi-gig plans, while the bottom port offers 1 Gbps for standard broadband connections. Because residential internet service typically includes only one public IP address, only one device—such as a router—should be connected directly to the S34 modem. The router will receive the public IP address from your cable provider, and you can then connect your PC (and other devices) to the router for internet access.
