“I see you can use Microsoft excel, Word etc… you mentioned using google’s version and it’s free. How comparable are Microsoft document with the googles version? Meaning if I open a file which originated by Microsoft can I continue to edit with google?”

No doubt, MS Word has many more features than Google Docs. However, if you're doing only basic word processing, then Google Docs is all you need.
