• Yes it needs to be hook up to a modem. This is just a wireless router.

• It would depend on your internet service provider, but it is likely you'll need a separate modem. I have Verizon, and I had to get a modem from them still, and connect it to the WLAN Port to gain wireless capability. This router is far superior to any router they offered though
