“The lightest touch of the charger cable causes it to stop charging, ie only stays charging when pushed in absolutely to the end, a fraction of mm out it stops charging. Is mine defective?”

It sounds like your charger is defective. I don't have this problem and my charger is about three years old with pretty heavy use. Get another one. Your life will be better.
