Yes, the fan was really loud, reason I returned it. High pitched whining sound, drove me nuts in a quite room :)

Tiny fans tend to be high-pitched, and it's the high pitch that makes it annoying even when it's barely audible. There are a few ways to avoid this. The first is to get something with an m3 processor (for example, the bottom-tier Surface Pro 4) or similar, low-powered (but slower) CPU that doesn't require a fan: guaranteed to have no fan noise at all! Obviously this will have lower performance. The second is to get a larger computer. Older, bulkier laptops often had audible fans when under load, but they were bigger fans and thus much less obnoxious. Desktop computers can get away with no fans at all with this same processor: it's just a matter of size. The final approach is to keep this ultrabook and tweak the power settings in the windows control panel until you're satisfied with the level of noise. The first step is moving from "Balanced" paradigm to "Power Saving" (or something like that)-- it's a single setting to change and you can always change back. If that's not enough, you drill down into the "advanced" settings option a few levels to the where you can control the processor power settings and thermal control paradigm. Decrease the maximum speed allowed to the processor from 100% to something more like 80% and make sure it's on "Passive" (it will slow the processor instead of speeding up the fan, if possible). Yes, this will reduce the performance when the processor is crunching some big task, but it will make the fan tend to stay on a lower setting. You can switch to "Balanced" or even "High Performance" if you need to run a heavy calculation, and then switch back for everyday use and/or long flights, etc, when quiet and battery life is most important. This will not damage your computer: it's perfectly safe. It will just make it a bit less "lead-footed" when it comes to hitting the accelerator. I've decided on this third approach because this is a great laptop apart from the fan, and any ultrabook with an i7 will have a fan. With these tweaks mine stays on the lowest fan speed unless i'm doing something really computationally intensive, and at that lowest speed it's completely inaudible except in an absolutely quiet room.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Disabling Asus bloatware, Cortana and a few other Microsoft cloud features can greatly reduce fan noise and duration. For some reason, this laptop was running 90-100% CPU usage upon first use, and those steps fixed it. You may still hear it after it's been on awhile or when playing music or video.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Have had the UX324QA for about 3 weeks now. Occasionally the fan will come on when not doing anything significant. Have checked CPU temp -- no reason for the fan to be running flat out. A power-off-reboot seems to reset it. Suspect there's a bios/software issue. Annoying, but semi-fixable.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I am also having this problem. It wouldn't be so bad but it's really high-pitched and driving me crazy. I tried returning and getting a new one in case it was just an issue with that particular computer but the new one isn't any better unfortunately. Have you found a fix?
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The first one I received did have a loud fan and also had a problem with the fliplock feature. Exchanged it through BestBuy and now I hardly hear the fan at all. Maybe you got a defective one...
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yess.. the fan tends to be pretty loud sometimes. when that happens i just restart it. other than that I love this laptop
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I haven't found a laptop yet where the fan doesn't run loud. I work in IT and even the work class of laptops that I support the fan gets loud.
