“When running under heavy gaming load for about an hour my gpu got upwards of 85c. Is this normal for this specific model? I have had little to no success adjusting fanspeed with proprietary software and i'm beginning to get concerned.”

Not sure about others, but respectfully, you are getting what you pay for. This is a mobile laptop and not a desktop. I might get a cooling pad if concerned. According to TomsHardware.com, most NVIDIA GPUs in the 970M series run at 80s C under normal load, and to not be concerned until you approach 90C. Hope this helps. Try checking out tomshardware.com
