“Is the sound supposed to be very bad/rough on this? If I don't use headphones of some sort, I have trouble hearing game or video sound even when it is all the way up.”

For me the sound is great especially with dolby atmos they sound awesome. But dont get me wrong MacBook speakers will always be the best.
