Thats your choice I have a 240hz monitor and it works great, but not many games can run at 240hz just light games like rocket league, it gets a little on the hot side but not to bad. But if I were you I would match the refresh rate of the monitor on the laptop and get a 144hz, but if you would like the extra smoothness when browsing or gaming (on light games) I would go 240hz its really your choice. I would just forget the 165hz all together.
