Make sure the 'Battery Saver' isn't enabled - I think it is enabled by default, and stops charging the battery at 60% to increase the lifetime of the battery. Disable that and charge to 100% before giving up on it, then you'll at least have a better idea about whether there's something really wrong. I don't have any display issues, even at 60%, but I have the Performance profile selected - so it doesn't dim/turn off the display to save battery.

For gaming, it's recommended to always have it plugged into power for the "turbo" mode to be efficient = high brightness and refresh rate
