The Android Wear OS in use on the Zen Watch is reliant on your smartphone for data access. Without that access the device cannot process voice commands so it doesn't know what you want it to do. I'm confident you can configure the watch to communicate with any android device that can use the appropriate Buletooth, and run the android wear app, but without data, you have a lame device.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, it will work as a simple regular watch, and count your steps, even without pairing it to a device. And yes it will pair with an android tablet, if you are in Bluetooth range. But all of the other benefits of a "smart watch" will be lost without the constant pairing with the internet connected device, like traffic, live notifications, etc... Still its a pretty nice watch., comfortable too.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. As long as you tablet is running Android 4.3 or later is should work. I have a Gear Live connected to my Nexus 7 (2013) is it works fine. I had to reset the watch as it did not want to connect if I had paired it to my phone first.
