“Will this work in mesh with RT-AC5300 in a mesh configuration. I don't mind to keep the old as an access point as long as it can be used in as a meshed node. I don't to lose that network device being sitting idle or disposed off because I bought this.”

The vendor does state the AC5300 as compatible with AIMESH. Something to be aware is the AIMESH nodes with 3 wireless bands 2.4Ghz,5Ghz-1,5Ghz-2) will use the 5Ghz-2 band as backbone to main station unless the ethernet backbone is connected.
