“I understand the phone has caller ID. If I remove the phone line from my current phone and attach the line to the CL4940 will the caller ID automatically function or do I have to have an extra charge added to my bill to have the service?”

Caller ID is from your phone company. Your phone company sends callerID information to your phone no matter what phone you have. It sends it. You just have to have a phone that accepts caller id which this one does. Also call-waiting callerid works too.
