“I need wifi when in Mexico to be able to work using my laptop and cell phone. Where I am staying has free wifi. I have an ATT cell phone/internet plan. Do I need this? Is this better security than the hotel wifi?”

If your cell phone has the ability to become a hotspot itself you can use that. Check the ATT website. This hotspot is a much more secure connection than open hotel wifi.
