“Does this have to be mounted to the wall or can it free stand and be placed against the wall?”

• It doesn't have to be mounted against the wall. We have 2. One we mounted & one is free standing. We've had no problems with the free standing. It's on a flat surface. However, if you have small kids or were putting it on carpet, I would recommend mounting it to a wall. You could tip it over too easy.
