13 inches is required to open the dust cover to the point where it will support itself. If you install the hinges on the turntable (the turntable only and NOT the dust over) you could lift the cover off if you have 9 inches of space. Having the hinges installed on the turntable will prevent the dust cover from sliding off the back of the turntable.
