It uses Bluetooth to communicate between the phone and lock when you are home. Bluetooth has its own encryption and key pairing standards which are strong enough that it would be much easier to kick in the door or bust a window. There is a wireless add on called the connect which connects it to the internet. Between hacking in vs a quick physical attack a thief would rather be in and out vs taking the time to run decryption on something that isn't really much of a barrier anyway. Besides, you can pick the lock faster than hacking it.
