The door can still be opened manually with your key. All the smart lock does is give you a sense of security to be able to check if you locked the door, that is if you have the hub set up, on your phone. Aside from that, the August smart lock will warn you of low battery and it will not lock you out as long as you still have your house key with you to open the door.

Otherwise you can still operate this manually by turning the knob or using the key outside. The only thing that wouldn't work is the "remote" capabilities with your phone. Electronic failure isn't relevant since this uses batteries and has no ac connection.
