Unless you activate (arm) the auto-lock feature, the lock will remain in whatever position you set it in. When you rise in the morning, unlock the door and it will stay that way until you lock it again. Once locked, it can be opened automatically if you have activated (armed) the auto-unlock feature. The main advantage of this lock is that you can control it from a remote location without using a key. You can lock or unlock it from anywhere in the world with an internet connection and you can be as close as standing right next to it with you phone in hand. The only "automatic" actions it affords are to auto-lock if you are more than 100 or so yards away outward bound and auto unlock when you are within 30 or so yards inbound. Hope this helps.

I have mine setup to work with automation scenes in Apple’s Home app, so that it locks when I leave home, or turn in for the night, and unlocks when I arrive home. One slight caveat, as it’s a secure device, it’s necessary to confirm you want the automation to run on your iPhone or Apple Watch, it doesn’t work completely automatically - but I guess this is because you don’t want to unlock your home if you’re just driving by.
