“Is there a clear plastic cover on the front and back side of this circular protective type device to protect the Air Tag? Or is it just a plastic or silicone type ring that goes around the edges of the Air Tag? Thanks in advance.”

Just a ring. With the Air Tag in place, you really don’t need a plastic cover.
