If your external hard drive is NAS (network-attached storage), you would not need an Ethernet adapter. If external your hard drive has only a USB-C port, you might not be able to use the network adapter unless the drive software happens to include a network driver AND can either power the network adapter or accept power from it. I doubt the USB port on any external drive can supply power. You would need to supply power to the adapter through its charger port.
