• Short answer: no. In your home, the device connects to your WiFi. However, you can also sign up for an IFFFT account and control your device from the cloud using a myriad of internet-based data. That account is also free, and one of the reasons I bought the device since it will be located far away from my home.

• No fees to Belkin. To control over the Internet, you need connectivity which may carry fees but that is between you and your ISP (or your wireless carrier). But you don't need a special "account" to access the device.

• No, it does not require a monthly fee. You must have a smart phone to use remotely though.
