Not sure if you've received an answer yet but my explanation would be that the 'wireless' part of this charger is from the charger to the device. The iphone or AirPods do not have to be plugged into IT in order to charge - that's where the 'wireless' part comes in. It sounds like you may have been thinking about a portable charger - once it is fully charged, you can take it with you to plug your devices into for charging. Hope this was helpful.
