The manual says that the nonstick surface will no longer work after continued use of the nonstick spray. It recommends against it. You can, however, use cooking oil.

According to the instruction manual - when the Green Ready Light turns on, open the Waffle Maker, and apply a light layer of vegetable oil, olive oil or canola oil to the cooking plates.
