Very simple; it has a grate used for the grill feature. They have pre-programmed times and temps for various meats and fish, plus guidelines in the booklet for achieving various degrees of doneness. I address this a bit in my review; there is also a feature where it beeps at you when it's time to flip (generally about 2/3 way through the cycle). You can open it and turn items any time, but I did it their way with both chicken and steak and was very satisfied with the results.
