“My PC only has USB ports, both 2.0 and 3.0. My dad is disabled and cannot make it down into the basement to use the PC. Can I use this adapter to transfer both video and sound to the HDTV upstairs? Distance is about 35-40 ft between machines”

This is a HDMI adapter. You can run an HDMI cord that is male on both ends. It was manufactured with video in min but can also handle audio. Make sure HDMI is set for default audio.
