“Do the vertical mounts need to be dead center of the horiizontal bars or can the vertical mounts and tv be installed 4 - 5 inches off-center?”

The vertical mounts DO NOT have to be centered. We placed the wall mount based on the location of the wall studs. We felt the tv would be more secure mounted on studs as opposed to using wall anchors in the drywall. We used the vertical mounts to center the tv to the desired location on the wall.
