Refrigerator water filters are supposedly made to last about 6 months. That's what the manufacturer says but it"s not going to poison you if you don't replace it at the recommended time, But it probably will become less and less effective the longer you go past those 6 months and mineral deposits could start to build up in the lines. So I would recommend you replace it no later than the 1-year mark from when you got the refrigerator/filter.
