It has 5 settings. 5 being the highest off of the floor and 1 being the lowest. I don’t have hardwood floors, but I have ran it across my linoleum floor before and it seemed to do well, without spitting the dirt out from under the vacuum.

I have had no experience using it on hard wood floors, only carpet and linoleum and have been very happy with it. I would imagine it would do just as well on hardwood if the brushes were adjusted to prevent scratching.
