It needs to be distilled water.

When we use tap water, the mineralization of those tubes will block the flow of the steam which has been our overall experience with all products that produce steam (irons, clothes steamers, ect.) For that reason, we only use distilled water for this mop and nothing else. On the high setting it doesn't guzzle that much water and I buy a gallon of distilled every few weeks and keep it in the pantry.Although you can use whatever type of water you want, I suggest you do the same and stick with distilled.
