I am not familiar with Xfinity but she will need an antenna to get the local channels and there is a subscription fee that can be paid monthly or yearly to get the TV guide. We have the subscription and the guide works good for being able to setup recordings. But I think the TiVo can be used without a subscription. If what you watch is local TV then this is a good alternative to paying for cable providing you have an antenna that gets good reception.

The proximity of the antenna being used in relationship to the location of the television stations transmission towers has everything to do with the number of stations you will receive. The better the antenna and the best possible positioning of that antenna will yield the most channels received. Sometimes an antenna with a built in signal amplifier can help. You can also purchase in-line signal amplifiers for even more boost.
