A magnet does not stick to it, so it is not metal. It is a very smooth, slick surface possibly made of plastic. The handle is the same color as the washer itself..white. I doubt that it will stain as it does not appear to be porous at all. We have only had this dishwasher for a couple of weeks but love it. It is extremely quiet, holds a lot of dishes, and does an excellent job of cleaning. Note that you must use a drying agent with every wash. Without the drying agent your dishes will be wet even if they sit overnight.
