“What else do I need with my speakers? I'd like to order these speakers for my husband's birthday (he's the tech savvy one, so forgive me for this very basic question). I have an iPhone and he has a Samsung Galaxy. We'd like our music to play from our phones over these speakers via Blu-Tooth. Do I need something between the phone and speakers in order to get the music to play? Do we need a receiver?”

Yes these are not wireless speakers so they are intended to be wired to a stereo receiver

The speakers would connect via speaker wire to the output of the receiver, and many receivers do include Bluetooth technology. Your phone would send audio wirelessly to the receiver via Bluetooth.
