For Bose Companion 5, you might not need sound converter. The USB is for your computer, and there is a control that you could plug in audio in and headphone out. I never try what you suggest but rather connect to my computer via USB.

An analog audio device can also be connected via the 3.5mm AUX in jack located on the system’s volume control pod. If you have a device with only an optical out, a DAC could conceivably be used to connect it to that analog AUX in. There is no way to convert an optical signal to work with the USB input on this system. If you are looking for similar equipment with an optical input for use with home theater equipment, our Cinemate speakers might be a good alternative.
