I have used it in this capacity and it works. Be warned that on hot days when you sweat the ear pads can be damaged and can crack and flake off.

Short answer - yes! My Honda mower is quite loud and it takes me 90 minutes to mow. The noise cancelling works very well, in part, because I don't have to turn the music up so much to help drown out the engine. Sound quality is also much better than the Sony headphones I used to wear.
